MER Clinic: Anthracite Coal Mining

Presented by Eric Dervinis @ MER Suffolk 2012

Nottingham Mine and Breaker in Plymouth, PA 1863 to 1950s -- History and Modeling Ideas Plymouth was home to some of the first anthracite mines, which made a number of owners very rich. The Nottingham mine shaft was dug in the 1860 s and was one of the last to be closed. A breaker was added, updated and then replaced with a modern breaker. The second breaker was demolished and then the coal was processed off site. We will visit the mine and breaker complex via post cards and contemporary photos. The Lackawanna Railroad was their primary source of transportation. Some of the buildings still stand and are in use today. We will trace the ownership of the mine and the ups and downs of the coal business. And then we will look at how to model the complex.
